WEST TEXAS, TX - The booming population has area elections offices scrambling to register all the new voters in west Texas. The deadline is quickly approaching to register to cast a vote next month and with all the new people in our area, local elections offices are expecting to have a record amount of registered voters.
The campaigning is at full-force and west Texans are preparing to exercise their right to vote. With soaring population, elections offices are in fifth gear, registering newcomers.
"If there's any indication from the folks that are coming in and the phone calls, I would say we are going to surpass 2008," said Ruth Sloan, Midland County Elections Administrator.
Elections administrators tell us voting is not only a privilege but a responsibility.
"It's our right, and we gotta keep moving forward and I always say if you let people vote for you then you don't have a voice," said Mitzi Scheible, Ector County Elections Administrator.
"Whoever you vote for, the basically tell you how you're going to live, taxes you will pay, laws that you follow so every election is important for that reason, there's always something in the election that will affect your life in some form or fashion," said Sloan.
So, here do you register to vote?
You can stop by your local County Elections Office or you can register at any Department of Public Safety location. Elections officials ask that you either provide a valid drivers license with an accurate address or have your social security number on hand. But hurry, because time is running out.
"October 9th is the last day to register to be eligible for this election," said Sloan.
Elections administrators tell me that this is a very important election, not only nationally but both Midland and Ector County ISD's have their school bonds on the ballot.
