Governor Perry Proclaims September Hunger Action Month 9/1/11

CBS7 News
September 1, 2011

Governor Rick Perry urged Texans to “bring awareness and attention” to efforts to end hunger during the month of September in a proclamation made public today. The proclamation cites the Governor's “deep concern” for citizens who face difficulty feeding their families.

Texas food banks welcomed the proclamation, citing USDA statistics that show Texas has the second highest rate of food insecurity in the nation. One in seven Texans currently receive food stamps, and the state's food banks feed millions of Texans each year.

“We are very pleased that Governor Perry has joined with us to highlight this critical issue,” said Barbara Anderson, State Director of the Texas Food Bank Network. “In today's economy, we appreciate the Governor rallying Texas communities around the growing need for emergency food.”

The proclamation is available for viewing online here: http://j.mp/om7I0r

Food banks statewide will be offering daily opportunities to help the hungry in the coming month. Interested members of the public can visit www.hungeractionmonth.org to learn more.

The Texas Food Bank Network provides a unified voice among nineteen food banks in support of a common mission to end hunger in Texas.
