Odessa Humane Society turns to the community for help in keeping its doors open

ODESSA -- Each year the Humane Society of Odessa struggles to keep its doors open for abandoned animals.

The non-profit organization runs solely on donations from the community and fundraisers.

On Saturday April 29th, the 2nd Annual Paws & Claws BBQ Cook-off Benefit will take place to help offset the organizations vet bills.

Board members of the society tell CBS 7 they easily pay $5,000 a month for vet expenses.

With there being a huge upswing in people leaving their pets behind, the shelter always stays full.

Judging will begin at 4:30p.m. at Corky’s Bar & Grill in Odessa.

There will be a 1st and 2nd place prize, as well as an overall best award and raffle prizes.

The entry fee for the beef, chicken and pork cook-off is $25 and plates will sell for $10.

Setup is Friday at 7p.m. and check-in will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The judging will kick off at 4p.m. Saturday.

At least five to six more people are needed to signup for the cook-off.
