Man arrested in connection to 2015 Big Spring murder

BIG SPRING -- A man is in custody in connection to a deadly shooting in 2015 that left one person dead.

According to the Big Spring Police Department, St. John Garcia Jr., 24, has been arrested for murder, a 1st Degree Felony.

On January 29, 2015 officers in Big Spring responded to the 1000 block of Stadium for a shots fired call.

When police arrived they found a man, identified as 20-year-old Matthew Burnett sitting in the passenger side of a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the chest. Burnett passed away from the wound at the scene.

The only witness to the shooting, Garcia, told police that he and Burnett were sitting in the driveway when Burnett accidentally shot himself in the chest.

Police investigated the shooting for the past three years with the help of the Texas Rangers.

On Ferbuary 20, 2018 the Criminal Investigations Division presented a probable cause affidavit and an arrest warrant for Garcia with the charge of Murder.

Garcia was arrested on Wednesday morning before being booked into the Howard County Law Enforcement Center.

Big Spring police say they thank the citizens of Big Spring and Mr. Burnett's family for their assistance and patience with the investigation.
