Exclusive Interview: Witness speaks on deadly carjacking in Odessa

ODESSA -- A man is dead after police say he was shot during a carjacking just after midnight on Thursday.

14-year-old Natalie Chavarria does what most girls her age do: Go to school, hang out with her friends, and of course text.

Unlike most teens her age Natalie witnessed something that she'll never forget.

It was a normal night for Natalie until she heard a struggle just outside of her window which was shortly followed by gunshots.

"When I heard that first gunshot I was pretty scared," said Natalie, "So I got up and I crawled to the corner of my bed and I kind of peaked out the window a little bit. I saw that guy standing by his truck and then I saw him run from the middle of the street back to his house."

Natalie didn't know it yet, but she had just witnessed 26-year-old Ryan Stebbins' murder.

Police say that Stebbins was trying to stop a suspect from stealing his pickup when he was shot in the chest. He was taken to the hospital where he passed away from his injuries.

"All throughout today I was just thinking about the ambulance, just seeing that person being taken away on the gurney has been running through my head all day," said Chavarria.

The carjacking and shooting happened in the 2200 block of Richmond Street. Stebbins' vehicle was later found abandoned in the 4300 block of Westcliff.

No arrests have been made in the case at this time.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Odessa Police Department or Odessa Crime Stoppers at 432-333-TIPS.
