West Texas Pecos County is in the running to be the sight of a $40-million project.
The University of Texas's Bureau of Economic Geology is spearheading an initiative that would be a deep bore-hole field test.
The objective is to determine if boreholes are sustainable for safe disposal of certain forms of radioactive waste and to collect data on the potential development of geothermal energy.
Pecos County does not have any plans to dispose of radioactive waste in this research project.
If selected the project would cost 40 million dollars and last up to 5 years.
